Steamed Hilsa in a Microwave

Steamed Hilsa or Bhapa Ilish is a traditional Bengali recipe. A super quick dish, this scrumptious delicacy would be loved by people of all age groups.

Ingredients

  • Hilsa fillets—5-7
  • Fresh coconut, shredded – 1 cup
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Curd – 2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Poppy seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Green chillies – 8
  • Mustard oil – As per requirement
  • Salt – As per requirement

Method

Step 1: Rinse and clean the hilsa fillets under running water for a minute. Take a bowl and add salt and turmeric powder and marinate it for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Soak poppy seeds in warm water for 10 minutes. Drain the excess water and keep it aside.

Step 4: Take a bowl and add curd, turmeric powder, mustard oil and coconut and mustard seeds paste. Mix all the ingredients and coat the hilsa fillets properly. Keep it aside for 15-20 minutes.

Step 5: Take a microwave proof container and add hilsa fillets, mustard oil, shredded green chillies and salt. Cover the container with clean plastic wrap/ cling film. Prick the cling film once with a toothpick or any sharp object to release vapours.

Step 6: Place the container in a microwave oven and cook it for 8-10 minutes at medium temperature. Notes/Tips:

Do not overcook the fish fillets in the microwave else it will become tight and chewy.
