Steamed Hilsa, also known as ‘Bhapa Ilish’, is a typical Bengali delicacy that is cooked for almost every festival or celebratory occasion. Though the dish looks very polished, this easy recipe requires few ingredients, no special techniques, and consumes very little time.

  • Prepping Time: 16-20 mins
  • Cooking Time: 35-40 mins
  • Level of Cooking: Easy
  • Taste: Spicy
  • Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • Hilsa Fish, medium-sized – 4
  • Mustard Seeds – 4 tbsp
  • Green Chillies – 4-5
  • Sugar – A pinch
  • Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – As per taste
  • Mustard Oil – 4 tbsp

Method

Step 1: Wash the fish fillets under running water for almost 1-2 minutes. Marinate it with salt and turmeric powder and keep aside.

Step 2: Take two green chillies, half a cup of water and mustard seeds and grind it into a smooth paste. Transfer it to a bowl and keep aside. You can use Morphy Richards Aero Plus 500W Mixer Grinder for seamless grinding purposes or head on to our official online store to check out more options.

Step 3: Take a bowl, and add mustard seed paste, turmeric powder, salt, sugar, and mustard oil and mix it properly. Divide the mixture into two portions.

Step 4: Add the fish pieces in one of the portions and coat the fillets properly. Cover the bowl with a cling film and allow it to rest for 5-8 minutes. Prick the film with a toothpick to release vapour.

Step 5: Take a microwave-safe tray, spread the remaining portion of the mixture, 3 slit green chillies and then place the mustard marinated fish pieces. Put 3-4 cups of water over the mixture.

Step 6: Now, microwave at high power for about 3-4 minutes and then at 40% temperature for almost 20 minutes. Take out the bowl from microwave and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. Do not take out the bowl until the water completely evaporates.

Your steamed Hilsa in the microwave is ready to eat now! Enjoy this delicacy with steamed white rice.

Notes/Tips:

It is advisable to marinate the fish fillets with the mustard paste gently else it might break into pieces.
